A large range of thumb screws made from steel, stainless steel and duroplast. All our thumb screws are knurled for extra grip and ergonomically designed for both ease of use and longevity. Many to DIN standard. The thumb screw is designed to be easily tightened and loosened by hand, hence the name thumb screw.

What does thumb screws

A screw drive that comes with either a tall headed or ridged (knurled) sides, or a key-like flat sided vertical head can be defined as a thumb screw. These screws can easily be tightened or loosened by hand without using any external drive. However, they are not ideally used for any structural applications.

Thumb screws application

A thumb screw actually acts like a bolt in most applications. When typically used, this blunt-nosed screw or bolt is fastened into a threaded hole and its ease of removal doesn’t require any external tool to assemble or disassemble any equipment. Besides safety covers for electronic gadgets, thumbscrews are also used in battery covers on many small electronic devices. A big advantage of the thumbscrew is that it does not fall out of the cover when the screw or bolt is loosened. This is because it uses a washer that is set in place to retain the screw in the cover. This feature does not allow the screw to fall off and get lost in the ground.

How do thumb screws work

Certain screw designs come with a Philips screwdriver slot on the fastener head. This gives an option for the fastener to be tightened using a wrench and not simply by hand. These kinds of thum bscrews that come with a Philips screwdriver slots are widely used in high vibration applications like off-road vehicles and boats. In this case, they are not able to get loosened over time, or due to over usage or impact. On the other hand, knurled headed fasteners can be tightened using a pair of pliers that ensure an efficient torque.

What are thumb screws used for

Several industrial machineries use thumb screws as fasteners on machine covers, safety guards and other components that require frequent removal and reinstallation. In many cases, this feature of thumbscrews aid in immediate maintenance and replacements of faulty tools. This also prevents the fasteners from breaking or stripping, and allows the engineers to take least amount of downtime to fix any problem within the system. On a larger note, the ease of using thumbscrews saves time, effort, and materials while working with certain devices. Ultimately, this aids in increased productivity
