What are rivet nuts? A rivet nut, also known as a blind rivet nut or threaded insert, is a one-piece internally threaded and counterbored tubular rivet that can be anchored entirely from one side. There are two types: one is designed to form a bulge on the back side of the panel as a screw is tightened in its threads. The other is similarly drawn in using a screw, but is drawn into the sleeve instead of creating a bulge.
How to install rivet nut? A rivet nut is a tubular nut that is also often called a blind nut or a nut-sert. It is made of anodized aluminum, so it cannot conduct any electric current. Installing a rivet nut is simple enough to do. There are no complicated materials needed to install one.
Step 1: Drilling a Hole
The first step is to measure the rivet nut’s diameter using a tape measure. Using the drill motor and bit, drill a hole at the base of the material where you will install the rivet nut. The drill bit you will need should be 1/32 inch larger than the diameter of the nut. Remove any burrs from the newly drilled hole using a round file.
Step 2: Placing the Rivet Nut
Secure the rivet nut onto the rivet nut tool by turning the nut clockwise onto the mandrel of the tool. Place the rivet nut into the hole. Use one of the adjustable wrenches to hold the bottom of the nut. With the other adjustable wrench, turn the top nut clockwise until the rivet nut is properly in the hole. Hold the upper nut in place with the wrench while you turn the lower nut counterclockwise to release the rivet nut tool.
What are rivet used for? A clever yet simple method of inserting a captive threaded insert into sheet metal, round or square tubes and even extruded aluminium sections. Widely used by manufacturers of tubular furniture, electrical switchgear, refrigeration, airconditioning and metal cabinets.
