CGN Launches Million-kilowatt Photovoltaic Project in Laos

Another million-level photovoltaic project involving investment and construction by Chinese enterprises was launched overseas.

On December 19, the first financial reporter learned from China General Nuclear Power Group (hereinafter referred to as "CGN") that on December 18, Laos local time, with the pouring of the first tank of concrete, CGN Laos Northern Connectivity Clean Energy Base phase 1 million kilowatt photovoltaic project officially started construction in northern Laos. This is the first large-scale photovoltaic project in Laos, marking another step in the cooperation between China and Laos in the field of energy.

The reporter learned from CGN that the project is located in the three provinces of Oudomxay, Luang Namtha and Phongsari in northern Laos, planning to build a large base of multi-energy complementary clean energy such as wind, light and biomass. The first phase of the project, with an installed capacity of 1 million kilowatts, is located in Monsay and Namo counties of Udomxay Province. It is expected to generate about 1.7 billion KWH of electricity annually, enough to meet the annual electricity needs of about 10 million households.

At the same time, the environmental benefits of the project are significant, saving about 510,000 tons of standard coal consumption per year, reducing the emission of sulfur dioxide 270 tons, nitrogen oxides 302 tons, and carbon dioxide 1.4 million tons.

CGN said that the company will work with more than 70 old and medium-sized enterprises to participate in the construction, and is committed to making the project a benchmark for power cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region. As a basic industry, electricity is an important field for building a China-Laos community with a shared future. In October 2023, China and Laos renewed and implemented the new five-year action plan for building a China-Laos community with a shared future, which clearly called for deepening electricity cooperation and accelerating electricity connectivity.

The reporter learned from CGN that the completion and operation of the project will not only bring clean and efficient power supply to Laos, but also transmit clean power to Yunnan Province of China through the China-Laos 500kV networking project to help Yunnan Province's energy transformation and power supply guarantee. At the same time, the project will drive more than 40 enterprises in China's new energy manufacturing, construction and construction industry chain and more than 30 local enterprises in Laos to participate in the construction, creating thousands of jobs and driving local investment of more than 150 million yuan.

Kangbian Ya Zhongwang, deputy governor of Udomxay Province, said that the CGN Udomxay photovoltaic project is a successful practice of China-Laos cooperation and will make positive contributions to the local social and economic development. The construction of the project will drive the construction of infrastructure such as roads, education, villages and towns, and water supply, create stable employment opportunities, and promote the economic and social development of rural areas.

The construction of CGN's connectivity clean energy base in Northern Laos will give full play to the technology, experience and manufacturing advantages of China's new energy industry to help Laos achieve energy transformation and industrial upgrading. The implementation of this project will further deepen the cooperation between China and Laos in the field of energy and promote the coordinated development of regional economy.
