According to Agence France-Presse reported on August 21, Australia on the 21st approved the construction of large-scale solar farms in northern Australia related plans, saying that the region will be the world's largest solar power generation area.
Australia's Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek explained that the massive solar farm is enough to power 3 million homes, and the project will include solar panels, batteries and the construction of a submarine cable linking Australia and Singapore in the future.
"This will be the largest solar power complex in the world and will position Australia as a global leader in green energy," the minister said.
The project, named "Solar Cable", will cover 12,000 hectares in sunny northern Australia. The project is backed by tech billionaire and environmentalist Mike Cannon-Brooks.
The farm can provide 4 GW of household electricity per minute, with another 2 GW to be transmitted to Singapore.
Australia is currently one of the world's leading exporters of coal and natural gas, but has been affected by climate change (high temperatures, floods and bushfires).
According to the latest data released by the Australian government, in 2022, the proportion of electricity generation relying on renewable energy in Australia's total power generation is 32%, while the proportion of electricity generation relying on coal still reaches 47%.
